Imposter syndrome describes the feeling of not having earned your own success, even though objectively everything indicates it. Those affected believe that they have only achieved their success by luck or chance - and are constantly afraid of “blowing their cover”.

Facts about imposter syndrome

  • 60-70% of all people experience feelings of being an imposter at least once in their lives
  • Students and young professionals are particularly affected - most often between the ages of 18 and 34
  • 52% of young professionals do not feel ready for their first job. 1 in 3 young professionals think they are not qualified enough

7 tips against imposter feelings

  1. Keep a success journal: regularly note down small and large tasks, projects and milestones that you have achieved. This will give you an overview and, if you have any doubts, you can remind yourself what you have already successfully completed.
  2. Share your thoughts with colleagues or friends with whom you feel comfortable. Sometimes an objective view can help you to recognize your successes.
  3. You don't have to “know it all” - but be open to learning. This shows real strength, not weakness.
  4. Instead of generally feeling “not good enough”, specify what exactly you find difficult - this often takes the power out of the feeling. You can also develop your skills in a purposeful way, which will give you more confidence in your day-to-day work.
  5. Reflect: Where were you a year ago? Six months ago? Growth is individual and always takes time.
  6. Small, achievable milestones help you to feel progress - instead of feeling overwhelmed.
  7. Understanding often helps more than suppression. The very fact that many people experience these feelings can be reassuring.

A reminder for you: You are not where you are by chance. You are qualified - even if your head sometimes wants to convince you otherwise.
