An essential part of the job interview usually comes right at the beginning: After the greeting and introduction by the recruiters, comes the question "Tell us about yourself and your background." We provide you with practical tips on how to present yourself convincingly.

Your background: You can assume that your interviewers have already read your resume or perhaps even have it in front of them. Therefore, briefly outline your previous experiences and focus more on what's between the lines: If you have gaps in your resume or important experiences, you can elaborate on them now. Turn a gap in your resume into a strength: For example, if you spent a year in Spain after college, emphasize how you improved your language skills.

Start with general information about yourself and then move on to your education. In your self-presentation, highlight skills, strengths, and soft skills.

Important: Your self-presentation is also an opportunity for recruiters to assess your communication skills and body language. Practice beforehand (maybe even in front of a mirror) and think of a coherent thread for your introduction.

Think beforehand about what you want to share and which achievements and professional experiences are particularly relevant for the future job. This way, you can emphasize why you are a good fit for the company – and show that you have done your research.

Try not to speak too quickly so that the recruiters can follow you well. If you're nervous, take a brief pause to catch your breath.

Tip: Remember the names of the people present and, if appropriate, use their names once or twice during the conversation. This earns you sympathy points and highlights your attentiveness.
