In this compact mini-guide, we explain what BAföG is, when you are entitled to it and what you need to bear in mind.
BAföG, the Federal Training Assistance Act, supports students from low-income families during their education. There are requirements to fulfill in order to be eligible for support. The application can be submitted online and should be done in a timely manner before the start of studies.
In general, young adults aiming for an advanced school degree or vocational qualification can apply for BAföG. However, there are certain requirements you must meet to be eligible. If your parents cannot solely support your studies, you are usually eligible for BAföG. If you are studying at a university, college, or academy, you must first be able to complete your intended degree within the standard period of study.
Eligibility for BAföG ends at the age of 45. So, if you start studying at the age of 44 and have not exhausted your eligibility, you can continue to receive BAföG for the entire duration of your studies.
The financial support through BAföG varies depending on the type of educational institution and the student's place of residence. The calculation of BAföG allowances was reformed in 2022 to support more people. The basis for this is §§ 23 and 25 of the BAföG. Vacation jobs affect BAföG. Gross income is calculated after deducting advertising and social flat rates as well as a deductible of €330. The deductible remains in place for gross income up to €6,281.04 in twelve months. This means that trainees can work a €520-minijob without monthly deductions from the BAföG funding.
The repayment of the money received is made in monthly installments over a maximum period of 20 years, with interest only accruing on delayed payments. The maximum repayment amount is €10,010. A bonus is granted if the loan is repaid in full or in part ahead of schedule.
BAföG can provide important financial support for completing a successful education. Get informed and start off on the right foot!
This is where your career starts.
