Insights

#BALM – We Set Standards in Modern Mobility and Transport Policy!

"Ensuring safe and sustainable mobility for people and efficient logistics for goods – that’s our mission at the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM)."

As a federal authority under the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), we are responsible for a wide range of tasks related to transportation, logistics, and modern mobility. Our responsibilities include monitoring and enforcement in freight transport, traffic data analysis, market observation across all modes of transport, as well as funding programs – particularly for cycling and public transport – and crisis management.

#WeMoveThings – and not just at our headquarters in Cologne, but also at 11 regional offices across Germany. More than 2,000 colleagues contribute their unique expertise, knowledge, and creativity — whether on-site, remotely, or in the field. Bring your skills and personality into our teams — they are the foundation of our continued development into a modern service provider for mobility.

We are fully committed to digitalization: not only are our control vehicles equipped with the latest high-end technology, but our employees also benefit from state-of-the-art workplaces. Everyone has their own laptop, enabling mobile work and flexible hours.

All this relies on our cutting-edge IT and communications infrastructure, with our data center in Cologne’s city center serving as the hub — connecting 15 locations nationwide and hundreds of interfaces with German and European authorities.

You can see — there’s something here for everyone!

Who We’re Looking For:

In addition to experienced professionals from public administration, we also welcome career changers and graduates who are ready to take their first steps into professional life. Whether you’re a public administration specialist, lawyer, economist, engineer, IT expert, or professional and managerial talent – your skills are needed here!

We also offer training programs for:

  • Administrative specialists (Federal Administration)
  • IT specialists (System Integration)

In addition, we offer a dual study program in Transport and Logistics Management (B.Sc.).

If you have already completed your training or degree, or will do so within the next six months, you can apply directly for one of our current job openings.

At BALM, we place great importance on equal opportunities. We particularly welcome applications from women, people with disabilities, and applicants of all nationalities and genders.

What We Offer:

  • Secure employment & fair pay: Salaries are based on the public sector pay scale (TVöD) and the Federal Salary Act (BBesG) – ensuring transparent, fair, and gender-neutral compensation.
  • Flexible working hours (flextime) and part-time options
  • Work-time accounts and overtime compensation
  • Remote work and mobile working options
  • Retirement benefits (VBL)
  • Employee savings schemes
  • Sustainability & climate awareness: Since November 2022, our Cologne headquarters has been certified as a “Gold”-level bicycle-friendly employer under EU standards.
  • Health promotion programs, including access to AWO Family Service fitness and wellness offerings
  • Excellent accessibility: Our headquarters in Cologne city center and 11 additional offices across Germany are all conveniently located and well connected by public transport.
  • Job ticket (depending on location) with a subsidy of up to €25 per month
  • Employee social services and an annual bonus payment
  • Extensive training and development opportunities
  • Strong focus on work-life balance and family-friendly policies
  • At BALM, we actively promote the compatibility of family, caregiving, and career, and we are officially certified for this commitment.
  • We value diversity — the wide range of skills, experiences, and perspectives in our teams helps us successfully tackle new challenges together.
We look forward to getting to know you!
